The 12-week course

Reading about writing does not build writing skill. Isolate one skill, attempt it, get specific feedback, correct it, and repeat.

Reading about writing does not create writing skill.

Kellogg's review of writing expertise is useful here. Advanced writing depends on coordinating content, text, and reader representations under limited attention. He argues for cognitive apprenticeship and deliberate practice.

In practical terms, do not try to improve "writing" all at once. Isolate a skill, attempt it, get specific feedback, correct it, and repeat.

Keep writing regularly, but count only deliberate practice

The schedule assumes you already write regularly. Morning Pages can continue. They do not count as the week's deliberate practice, because their purpose is generation, not controlled skill training.

Work through one skill each week

The twelve weeks run in this order:

  1. Week 1: Writing as thinking
  2. Week 2: From fact to argument
  3. Week 3: Reader value
  4. Week 4: Structure and unity
  5. Week 5: Openings and reader contracts
  6. Week 6: Observation, scene, and detail
  7. Week 7: Character and backstory
  8. Week 8: Paragraphs, sentences, and rhythm
  9. Week 9: Compression and voice
  10. Week 10: Sources and verification
  11. Week 11: Revision and cold-reader testing
  12. Week 12: AI, authorship, and the capstone
